Admire them from the terrace at\u00a0Royal Garden Caf\u00e9\u00a0on the appropriately-named Ich\u014d Namiki-d\u014dri (meaning, Gingko Street).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jsx-3701276942\">\n<figure class=\"jsx-3638203379 ImageContainer\">\n<div class=\"jsx-3638203379 \">\n<figure style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"jsx-3701276942 w-full max-w-full h-auto\" title=\"Features - resized-486eb3633592\" src=\"https:\/\/lp-cms-production.imgix.net\/features\/2017\/10\/resized-486eb3633592.jpg?fit=max&amp;w=800&amp;q=40&amp;sharp=10&amp;vib=20\" alt=\"tokyo in autumn\" width=\"800\" height=\"1067\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ich\u014d Namiki-d\u014dri is flanked by sanguine golden leaves during the fall months \u00a9 Rebecca Milner \/ Lonely Planet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"jsx-3638203379 caption\" data-testid=\"image-caption-txt\"><strong style=\"color: #111111;font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;font-size: 27px\">Rake in some luck<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em>Tori-no-ichi<\/em>\u00a0(Rooster Fairs) have been a Tokyo tradition for centuries, held at shrines in November (the month of the rooster according to the Chinese zodiac).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Vendors sell\u00a0<em>kumade<\/em>\u00a0(bamboo rakes), that have been so lavishly decorated with symbols for wealth (like the god Ebisu), longevity (pine boughs and cranes) and happiness (owls) as to totally obscure their use \u2013 except metaphorically.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jsx-108482663 Ad\" data-testid=\"ad-native-div\">Hanazono-jinja\u00a0in\u00a0Shinjuku\u00a0and\u00a0Ch\u014dkoku-ji\u00a0in\u00a0Asakusa\u00a0both celebrate Tori-no-ichi. Thousands descend on\u00a0Shibuya Crossing\u00a0in costume for one big open-air party \u2013 you can elect to arrive in style, in a go kart and dressed as a cartoon or video game character, courtesy of\u00a0Maricar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Other popular gathering spots include Tokyo\u2019s gay district, Shinjuku Nich\u014dme \u2013 start the evening at\u00a0Aiiro Caf\u00e9\u00a0\u2013 and the rowdy bars and clubs of nightlife district\u00a0Roppongi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The city of Kawasaki (in between Tokyo and Yokohama) hosts a massively popular, other-worldly parade over the weekend closest to Halloween. For parts of September and the whole of October, Tokyo Disney Resort has Halloween-themed parades and decorations.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #111111;font-family: Roboto, sans-serif;font-size: 27px\">Have a moon-viewing party<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>You already know\u00a0<em>hanami<\/em>\u00a0(cherry blossom viewing), now meet its autumnal cousin\u00a0<em>tsukimi<\/em>\u00a0(moon viewing). Full moons in Japan from September to December are big and golden, just like a\u00a0<em>senbei<\/em>\u00a0(toasted rice cracker) hanging in the sky. The traditional day for\u00a0<em>tsukimi<\/em>\u00a0is the fifteenth day of the eighth month, on the old lunar calendar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Every year, the garden\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tokyo-park.or.jp\/park\/format\/index032.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Mukojima Hyakkaen<\/a>\u00a0stays open until 9pm for three days on and around the full moon for a lantern-lit celebration with live\u00a0<em>koto<\/em>\u00a0(zither) music. Yokohama garden\u00a0Sankei-en\u00a0hosts a similar event with music and dance staged at one of the garden\u2019s antique pavilions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>And if you can\u2019t make it to an event, all month you\u2019ll see restaurants offering seasonal moon-themed treats, like\u00a0<em>tsukimi-dango<\/em>\u00a0(rice dumplings). Don\u2019t despair if you\u2019re visiting out of season though, you can get\u00a0<em>tsukimi-udon<\/em>, noodles topped with a bright yellow egg yolk year-round.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Catch a show<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Over the last week of October,\u00a0Roppongi Hills\u00a0rolls out the red carpet for the\u00a0Tokyo International Film Festival, which includes a mix of Hollywood blockbusters, the latest installments from Japanese veterans and new flicks from up-and-coming directors around Asia. In November, there\u2019s\u00a0Tokyo Filmex, another film festival, but with a less commercial focus. Both are open to the public; most films are screened with English subtitles (but it\u2019s best to double check).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.festival-tokyo.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Festival\/Tokyo<\/a>, Japan\u2019s biggest performing arts festival, runs throughout October and into November, with shows taking place in theatres \u2013 and on streets \u2013 around the city. King among them is the prized matsutake mushroom, which can cost hundreds of dollars per kilo. Look for them on sale at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/japan\/tokyo\/attractions\/tsukiji-outer-market\/a\/poi-sig\/1315243\/1323633\">Tsukiji Outer Market<\/a>.\u00a0<em>Saba<\/em>\u00a0(pacific saury) and\u00a0<em>sanma<\/em>\u00a0(mackerel) are the fish of autumn; both are delicious as sushi or grilled (<em>yaki-zakana<\/em>) at an izakaya (Japanese gastropub) like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/japan\/tokyo\/restaurants\/okajoki\/a\/poi-eat\/1546781\/356817\">Okaj\u014dki<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Other foods to look out for include:\u00a0<em>kuri<\/em>\u00a0(chestnuts), usually steamed with rice or sweetened and used in desserts;\u00a0<em>kaki<\/em>\u00a0(persimmon); and\u00a0<em>kabocha<\/em>\u00a0(Japanese pumpkin).
