There were enthusiasts voices about the grand finale, but there was also those unsatisfied by that unexpected turn of events. After Diocletian\u2019s death in 316 AD, many locals moved inside the palace walls, and it continued to evolve. Today, the city\u2019s fusion of ancient and modern can be found in trendy restaurants, bars, shops and B&amp;B\u2019s packed tightly within the ancient limestone walls.<\/p>\n<p>Split Old Town and nearby Kliss Fortress were chosen as the filming locations for the city of Meereen, and neighbouring town Kastel Gomilica as the backdrop to the free city of Braavos. A large chunk of Meereen was filmed inside the palace basements, called substructures. You could recognize there the scene from the Sons of the Harpy massacre in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2XJRbw9\">season 5<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Kastel Gomilica<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Kastel Gomilica is 20 minutes away from Split and you could smell the sea salt as soon as you arrive. It was originally a 9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century castle home to generations of Croatian kings. It was then transformed into a fortress from which Croatian soldiers defended their country during the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century Ottoman invasions. \u00a0The untouched fortress looks quite familiar as the city of Meereen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-274\" src=\"https:\/\/vookbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/klis-fortress-696x464.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vookbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/klis-fortress-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/vookbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/klis-fortress-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/vookbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/klis-fortress-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/vookbook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/klis-fortress.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One can even customize its tour upon request.
