With white sands, curling waves and sandstone cliffs, Bondi Beach is Australia’s most famous beach and a world icon. The jewel of Sydney’s laid-back beach lifestyle, Bondi has something for everyone, from swimming, surfing and sunbathing to a spectacular coastal walk and delicious places to eat.

Only 30 minutes by public transport from Town Hall in the city centre, Bondi is home to one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in the world and one of Australia’s oldest swimming clubs, iconic Bondi Icebergs at the southern end of the beach. You can swim laps with the Icebergs in the Bondi Baths.

Professional lifesavers patrol the beach all year – they even have a TV show, Bondi Rescue. With a temperate climate, locals and visitors swim year-round and surfers can be spotted in the waves at dawn. A fun way to experience Bondi is to learn to surf at a surf school, such as Let’s Go Surfing.

Other things to do include the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, a picturesque 6km trail with vantage points on sandstone clifftops to spot whales between May and November. You’ll find a vibrant events calendar of markets and festivals, with Sculpture by the Sea a popular spring attraction.

The world’s biggest annual free outdoor sculpture exhibition has more than 100 Australian and international artists displaying their works. Ancient Aboriginal rock carvings are in the area and tour groups can explore this heritage and more with indigenous-owned Bondi Aboriginal Walking Tours.

A tasty range of beachside cafes, hip bars and restaurants will tempt your tastebuds. Two acclaimed restaurants with marvellous ocean views, Icebergs Dining Room and Bar at the southern end and Sean’s Panaroma at the northern end, feature in The Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide.

Hall Street and other streets back from beachside Campbell Parade are dotted with delightful cafes and restaurants too. Or buy takeaway fish ‘n’ chips and savour them on the beach. There are plenty of places to stay in Bondi, from youth hostels to apartments, beach houses and beachside hotels.
